Maria Sonevytsky wins IASPM Graduate Student Paper prize!

The 2006 International Association for the Study of Popular Musics (US) Graduate Student Paper Prize has been awarded to Columbia PhD student Maria Sonevytsky for her paper "Leather, Metal, Wild Dances: Ukrainian Pop's Victory at the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest and the Politics of Auto-Exoticism." Congratulations to Maria!

Congratulations to our latest PhDs, MAs, and BAs!

Congratulations to David Novak, Amanda Minks, and Daniel Thompson, all of whom defended PhD dissertations this year. Amanda Minks will be teaching anthropology in the Honors College of the University of Oklahoma next year; David Novak will be teaching ethnomusicology at Sarah Lawrence College.

Columbia Ethnomusicology students win a record number of major grants for dissertation field research!

Graduate students in the Columbia Ethnomusicology PhD program have won numerous competitive dissertation research fellowships this year, including two International Dissertation Research Fellowships from the Social Science Research Council (our 5th and 6th SSRC awards since 2002), Fulbright-IIE and Fulbright-Hays fellowships (our 6th and 7th since 2002), a Wenner-Gren Foundation Dissertation Improvement Fellowship (our second since 2002), an IREX Eastern European Studies Fellowship, two full-year and one summer FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) fellowship read more »
