Click here to view a PDF guide to bargain hotels in New York City, and especially those close to Columbia. As you no doubt know, NYC is an expensive hotel market. If you plan on coming and staying at a hotel, it is *highly* recommended that you book your room as soon as possible. Even if you are hoping for a free crash space (see below) it might make sense to reserve a room with the possibility of a later cancellation, just to be safe. We'll determine what we can do about crash space well before the cancellation deadline for most hotels.

MACSEM 2008 Featured Performers: Lucia Pulido and Cosmas Magaya with Paul Berliner

We are pleased to announce that Lucía Pulido and Cosmas Magaya with Paul Berliner will be performing at MACSEM 2008 on Saturday, March 29th at 7:30 PM.

Lucia Pulido Lucía Pulido is a Colombian singer who has been in New York since 1994. Prior to arriving in New York, Ms. Pulido toured and recorded as half of "Ivan y Lucía." Since then, she has recorded multiple albums with other artists as well as a solo album (Lucía, Intuition 2000), and has performed all over the city. Among other projects, she is currently a member of the Palenque Ensemble, which interprets traditional Colombian genres through an experimental lens. Cosmas Magaya

Cosmas Magaya is a world-renowned mbira player and teacher from Zimbabwe who has played and taught all over the world alone and with his ensembles, Mhuri yekwaRwizi and Zimbabwe Group Leaders Mbira Ensemble.


Paul Berliner is an mbira player and professor of music at Duke University. He is the author of The Soul of Mbira: Music and Traditions of the Shona People of Zimbabwe (University of Chicago Press, 1978) and has been collaborating and studying with Mr. Magaya since 1971. MACSEM 2008: Keynote by Dely Reyes

We are pleased to announce that the keynote address at MACSEM2008 will be delivered by Prof. Adelaida Reyes. Her lecture will be entitled "What Do Ethnomusicologists Study? An Old Question for a New Century."

Adelaida Reyes is Professor Emerita at New Jersey City University. She received her PhD in Ethnomusicology in 1975 at Columbia University. Her most recent books include Songs of the Caged, Songs of the Free: Music and the Vietnamese Refugee Experience (Temple University Press, 1999) and Music in America: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture (Oxford University Press, 2004).

MACSEM conference events will occupy the full day on Saturday, March 29, from 9AM to 10PM (including a keynote lecture by Adelaida Reyes, Professer Emerita at new Jersey City University and an evening concert); and a half day on Sunday, March 30, from 9AM to 1PM. Featured performers and a keynote speaker will be announced in early January, 2008. Most events will be held in the Davis Auditorium in the Fu School of Engineering on the Morningside Campus of Columbia University.
