Ono Gagaku Performs at Riverside Church

You are invited to an evening of gagaku music and sacred dance, presented by the Institute of Medieval Japanese Studies in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture.

Gagaku – Japanese Royal Court Music and Sacred Dance
Performed by the Ono Gagaku Society of Tokyo
and celebrants of the International Shinto Foundation
Part I: Orchestral Works (Kangengaku)
Part II: Sacred Shrine Maiden Dance (Kagura mai)

Jonathan Shannon is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Hunter College. He earned his PhD inAnthropology from the City University of New York Graduate Center. His research focuses on musical aesthetics and cultural politics in the Arab world and Mediterranean. He has conducted field research in Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Morocco, and Spain. His book, Among the Jasmine Trees: Music and Modernity in Contemporary Syria, was recently published by Wesleyan University Press in their Music/Culture Series. _______________________________________________________________
Columbia Gagaku Ensemble to Perform at Casa Italiana, Monday Dec. 4, 8 PM

Our own Gagaku ensemble, directed by Prof. Naoko Terauchi, will perform as part of the Music Performance Program winter chamber music concert at Teatro Casa Italiana (The Italian Academy), on the Columbia University campus, on Monday, Dec. 4, 2006.  The concert begins at 8 PM and features several other student groups.

“Etenraku” 
“Koromogae”

Performed by students in World Music Ensemble: Gagaku (MUSI V1626) & featuring Musicians from the Tenri Cultural Institute, New York
